2015, welcome! Time to reflect on things from 2014, make lists and all that stuff. So, without further ado my favourite discoveries in 2014. They aren’t necessarily new, but I just discovered them this year.

Agalloch – The Serpent and the Sphere (2014)
My favourite band, so yeah….I really liked this album. I felt that they sort of went back to their roots and incorporated elements from folk again. I’m so glad they did. This album feels more ‘Agalloch’ than ever. Favorite song: Vales Beyond Dimension
Ulver & SUNN O)) – Terrestrials (2014)
I guess this is a record that also gets a lot of hate because it might come across as pretentious, but I like the combo of these two bands. Don’t know if it’s really drone, but it brings me in a nice state of mind.
Venetian Snares – My Love Is a Bulldozer (2014)
When I played this album for the first time, I was really unsure of what to expect. I didn’t expect it to be this good. The title song of the album wins ‘most absurd lyrics-award’. Great song though, when you can stop giggling about the lyrics. This album is a great example of what Venetian Snares is capable of.
Sol Invictus – Once Upon a Time (2014)
Ok, I’m just a sucker for Sol Invictus. Combine that with the fact that Don Anderson also plays on this album and I’m sold. You like (neo)folk? You’ll like this.
Regarde Les Hommes Tomber – Regarde Les Hommes Tomber (2013)
Missed the show of this band on Roadburn this year because the queue to get in was too huge. Now I know why. This is the type of metal that I like a lot. Hard to describe why, but it makes me feel alive.
Year of No Light – Tocsin (2013)
Also, a band that I finally ‘discovered’ this year. Love the contrasts between heavy and light style and the use of brass instruments.
Winterfylleth – The Divination of Antiquity (2014)
Old love never dies. My love for black metal never dies. This album has everything I love: nice riffs, nice grunts, nice everything. Love it love it!!! Can you believe that listening to black metal makes me happy….because it does. I love playing this album when I’m on public transport; it calms me down.
Lanthlos – Melting Sun
This record would be great for people who like metal, but don’t like the grunts. This is sort of post-core, but with a friendly edge to it.
Speaking of old loves. I haven’t stopped playing the Andy Winter – Incomprehensible record. It was released January 2013 and it’s one of my favourites of all-time already. So go listen to it if you haven’t already. (To my dismay this album isn’t available on YouTube! The video’s are blocked. It is available on Spotify though.)
I also never stopped listening to Therion. I’ve been listening to this band since I was 17 years old and I still have a weak spot for them.
